Tendon overload results in alterations in cell shape and increased markers of inflammation and matrix degradation
Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports December 2014
By C.T. Thorpe., S. Chaudhry., I.I Lei., A. Varone., G.P. Riley., H.L. Birch., P.D. Clegg and H.R.C. Screen.

In this paper the authors investigated tendon cell responses to repeated loading, designed to mimic a bout of high-intensity exercise. They found that loading resulted in damage occurring between the collagen fibres of the tendon fascicles (matrix), leading to deformed cells (cell rounding) and inflammation. The results suggest that inflammation may play an important role in the initial cell response to tendon damage (tendinopathy) and this information is critical to help develop effective treatments.
